Journeys through time

Maribor's timeline is captivating, as the city has undergone numerous transformations and reinventions at the crossroads of the Germanic and Slavic worlds.

From prehistory...

The Regional Museum Maribor resides in Maribor Castle, featuring its famous staircase, Knight's Hall, and charming courtyard. Visitors can explore permanent exhibitions ranging from the archaeological display "First Touch" to the medieval tale "Between Splendor and Misery" and "Portrait of the Bourgeoisie," which explores cultural life in 19th-century Maribor. Rich collections of visual arts, fashion, weaponry, and crafts add to the museum's allure.

In celebration of its 120th anniversary, the museum has curated 120 objects telling the stories of Maribor and its influential figures. Among them are a fibula from the 10th century BC, the city seal of Maribor from around 1300, a seating set from the mid-18th century, Rudolf Maister's cap, Marshal Josip Broz Tito's uniform, and women's ankle boots made of snakeskin from the Kleinschuster factory in the 19th century.

...to the 20th century

At the Museum of National Liberation Maribor, exhibits depict the tumultuous history of the border city Maribor in the 20th and 21st centuries. It chronicles the city's highs and lows, from one of the fastest-growing cities to one of the most devastated communities after World War II in Yugoslavia. Visitors can explore Maribor's industrial boom, the period of battles for the northern border with General Rudolf Maister, and the fate of Maribor's residents during and after World War II.

The exhibition Industrial Maribor in the 20th Century showcases the city's rich industrial heritage, which continues to define it today. Did you know that just four years after Edison invented the light bulb, Maribor lit up Slovenia's first electric light?

From the oldest grapevine...

The story of Maribor is inseparably linked with the world's oldest grapevine. You can learn about the tale of the resilience of the 460-year-old grapevine, its caretakers, and its remarkable heritage at the Oldest vine museum in the world.

...to the smallest museum

The Museum for One, housed in a former newsstand, measures just 7.5 square meters and is Slovenia's smallest museum. It preserves the tradition of the former social hub, where visitors can discover historical facts, legends, and anecdotes of Maribor.
