European Mobility Week 2024

The Municipality of Maribor has joined the map of Slovenian municipalities that participate in European Mobility Week every year.

European Mobility Week: Cities for people, not cars

Have you ever dreamed of a city where you could stroll carefree, play, or spend time with friends without the noise of traffic threatening you? European Mobility Week (EMW), which will take place in Maribor from 15th to 22nd September, offers an opportunity for this vision to become a reality!

This year's EMW theme is 'Shared public space', emphasizing the importance of well-organized city centers for all residents. Cars, in fact, occupy too much space that could be used to create more vibrant, green, and pleasant urban areas.

Why is a well-organized public space important?

  • More social justice: Access to well-organized public spaces allows everyone, regardless of age, physical ability, or social status, to enjoy the city.
  • Safer traffic: Reduced traffic means fewer accidents and less pollution.
  • Sustainable mobility: More people will choose to walk, bike, or use public transportation, reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Improved well-being: More green spaces and less noise improve mental and physical health.

What's happening at European mobility week?

Test closures of city centers bring a fresh breeze to our urban life. Some parts of our cities will be temporarily closed to motor traffic and transformed into attractive public spaces where we can stroll, cycle, or enjoy each other's company.

Through workshops and events, we will have the opportunity to learn about the benefits of sustainable mobility and actively participate in shaping our city. Exhibitions and promotional materials will present innovative solutions for more vibrant and sustainable future cities.

How can you get involved?

  • Leave your car at home: For shorter distances, walk, bike, or use public transport.
  • Support local initiatives: Participate in volunteer actions or sign a petition for better-maintained public spaces.
  • Raise awareness among friends and family: Tell them about ETM and the benefits of sustainable mobility.
  • Join European Mobility Week events and get active!

Let's create a city together that is friendly to both people and the environment!
