My Book Kindly Asks...

An Exhibition of Memory Books

Until the 1990s, memory books were a popular way of expressing affection and friendship, especially among primary school children. Classmates, teachers, parents, grandparents, friends, and even priests would write their thoughts into these cherished books.

Although modern technologies have long since replaced memory books, researchers have recently begun to recognize their true value. These books serve as a fascinating source of biographical data about the people who wrote in them, offering insights into the cultural background and mindset of the time in which they were created.

Entries often featured popular sayings, verses, and intimate reflections, accompanied by a variety of artistic elements: drawings, engravings, delicate embroidery, paper silhouettes, locks of hair, pressed flowers, and printed commercial images.

The most common artistic motifs included garlands, hearts, and flowers such as forget-me-nots, roses, and carnations. Memory books remain a valuable testimony to days gone by.
