60. Festival Borštnikovo srečanje: The Welkin at the Fran Žižek Hall

Questions of Freedom

Part of Lucy Kirkwood’s theatrical journey includes collaboration with the British company Clean Break, which since 1979 has been addressing women’s criminality and the justice system through theatre programs in prisons. Their work goes beyond art – through the voices of incarcerated women, they expose deeply rooted systemic inequalities and biases within the judicial system. These themes strongly resonate in Kirkwood’s play The Welkin.

Set in 1759, in a village in Suffolk, a jury of women faces a critical task – to decide the fate of Sally Poppy, accused of murder. But the story goes beyond the specifics of one case: it brings to the fore questions of freedom, responsibility, and the (in)visible societal pressures that, despite the historical setting, remain strikingly relevant today.

Against the backdrop of a historical moment marked by the rise of capitalism, the enclosure of common land, and the exploitation of unpaid female labor, the play sharply sketches out the ongoing struggles against patriarchal domination. These struggles often appear as binary divides between femininity and masculinity – but in truth, they uncover deeper systemic mechanisms of power and subjugation.
