60. Festival Borštnikovo srečanje: Transport: Freight at Sodni stolp

On the Road, Without a Stop

Freight tackles one of the most pressing yet often overlooked issues of the modern world – the rapid growth of freight road transport, which has surged by as much as 30% in recent years. Every day, between 20 and 50 million trucks move across the world’s roads, reflecting the scale and impact of global trade networks. The performance sheds light on the invisible backdrop of consumerist reality, where speed and accessibility drive economic growth – but at a high cost: depletion of natural resources, environmental pollution, and systemic exploitation of workers’ rights.

At the heart of the story is a truck driver caught under the pressure of unrealistic deadlines, navigating between employer expectations and countless roadblocks. A night brings an unexpected encounter; by morning, a shocking event unfolds – testing the limits of human endurance and moral judgment. The performance confronts us with the question: what responsibility do we bear as part of this exploitative, hyper-consumerist system?

Freight is part of the international project Transport, created within the Creative Europe programme. Initiated by director Tin Grabnar, the project brings together six theatres from Slovenia (Ljubljana Puppet Theatre and Maribor Puppet Theatre), Poland (Białostocki Teatr Lalek), Estonia (Eesti Noorsooteater), Lithuania (Klaipėdos lėlių teatras), and the Czech Republic (Divadlo ALFA). Co-funded by the European Union, the project will, during the 2024/2025 season, unite European artists in exploring the future of mobility, labour, and ethics.
