Struggle at the Chasm

60. Festival Borštnikovo srečanje: Struggle at the Chasm in the Fran Žižek Hall

The Fight for Survival

Voranec’s works Struggle at the Chasm, Tearflowers, and Self-Grown are among the foundational texts of Slovenian literature, with their film adaptations deeply embedded in the collective historical memory of the Slovenian people. The harrowing story of the Dihur family, relentlessly fighting for survival in harsh conditions on difficult, muddy land, has become part of our cultural heritage. Today, in this iconic narrative, we uncover new, previously overlooked and unspoken layers of its immense brutality.

The Dihur family is not merely a representation of a distant rural past but remains a reflection of contemporary times, where social hardships only intensify, albeit in more refined and concealed forms. Violence born from the desperate struggle for survival—whether due to land, bureaucracy, or general social inequality—knows neither place nor time but always finds its way to cruelty. Director Jernej Lorenci approaches this theme with his uniquely subtle yet radical staging, bringing the rawness of the fight for survival to the forefront.
