The Future

60. Festival Borštnikovo srečanje: The Future in the Fran Žižek Hall

Invisible Waste

Visible and invisible remnants of humanity travel through vast atmospheric layers and powerful ocean currents. Swept far away, they reach the heart of the ocean—an isolated atoll, two thousand kilometers from the nearest civilization. There, they accumulate in the body of the tireless albatross, which, in its long flights, gathers food for its chick—only to bring back poison instead. Plastic fills the belly of the newborn bird.

For millions of years, countless generations of albatrosses have preserved their species through care and perseverance. Then, they encounter human ingenuity—material less than a century old—plastic, which disrupts the ancient balance of nature.

Chemicals, plastic, living beings, their heritage, and relationships are intertwined in a complex web of influences. Within it lies the future—an inevitable consequence of what we create today.

Instead of spoken words, the performance is accompanied by projected text, which at first glance seems disconnected from the events on the beach. It describes nature in the distance, where different laws apply than in the human world. Yet, even though nature is not part of our immediate pleasures and concerns, it cannot escape the consequences of our actions.
