Vollmaier: Kind of Laibach
In 2019, Vollmaier created a 45–50-minute composition based on the music of the Slovenian avant-garde group Laibach, which he began developing from motifs found in the following songs: Smrt za smrt, Krvava gruda, plodna zemlja, Ti, ki izzivaš, Brat moj, Resistance is futile… The program presents a dark yet vital interpretation, full of rich and open sound, as well as subtle musical moments.
"The piano has no wrong notes." — Thelonious Monk
"We agree, but with Laibach, there are no correct notes either." — Laibach
Imagine sculpting a piano classic from Laibach’s "industrial", monolithic sound structures. Vollmaier does not approach this challenge as one might expect — with prepared piano or electronic interventions — but instead finds inspiration in the virtuosic pianism of Glenn Gould and Vladimir Horowitz, as well as from his mentor (and former Laibach collaborator), Aci Bertoncelj. His fidelity to the original music is expressed through testing the extreme limits of both the performer and the instrument. With industrial precision and physical persistence, he breaks through Laibach’s linear strictness — yet the final result is, surprisingly, an even more monolithic, though absolutely subtle structure, woven solely from the black and white keys of that elegant machine, the concert grand piano — which, for Vollmaier too, is larger than life.
