The Šantel Artistic Family: Three Female Painters in Maribor

The Šantel family, bridging the Styrian and Littoral regions, is well known in Slovenian art and music history. However, the Maribor chapter of the three women painters has remained unexplored – until now.

The first part of the exhibition focuses on Avgusta Šantel Jr. (Gorizia, 1876 – Ljubljana, 1968), a painter, musician, and teacher, who, after working in various Slovenian and Istrian towns, arrived in Maribor in 1920 to teach at the Second Girls’ Civic School.

While her work has recently been featured in smaller retrospective exhibitions across the towns where she lived and worked, this research-based exhibition at the UGM Kabinet shines a light on her Maribor period. Alongside her long-standing painting practice, this era was marked by a particular dedication to printmaking. The exhibition also highlights her floral and landscape motifs. Some of these works, created and originally exhibited in Maribor, are being publicly displayed again after a hundred years.

The spotlight will be on works from the Maribor Art Gallery Collection, while the artist will also be presented through a number of previously unexhibited pieces from private collections, generously shared in response to UGM’s open call.
