In the exhibition Front View, Nika Rupnik presents paintings on canvas, drawings made on plexiglass and graphic prints. She expands the field of painting with her recognizable and distinct style. Her motifs depict temporary and timeless environments, where she intertwines urban, (un)inhabited, even abandoned architectural landscapes with elements of nature. Her canvases often depict mountains and fragmented images of mountain huts, which evoke a sense of security and represent places of temporary refuge. These spaces, incorporated in her work, act as symbols of security, but at the same time carry a sense of uncertainty, elusiveness and transience. A characteristic of her work is a refusal of limiting herself to the classical drawing trace; the image sometimes transitions into a light projection, a spatial effect and a graphic print. Dispersed, multi-layered works are both a symptom and a metaphor of a broader existential environment, which the artist consistently explores.
