GveriLLaz are not only truly unique, but quite possibly the most acclaimed non-institutional big band ensemble in Slovenia!
Active for over a decade, the ensemble brings together young jazz musicians and has, in recent years, thrived under the leadership of violinist Peter Ugrin.
The group has performed at many prestigious festivals, including the Nišville Jazz Festival in Niš (Serbia) and the Jazz Festival Ljubljana. In 2018, they claimed the top prize in the highest category (Top Class) at Europe’s largest big band competition — the International Big Band Jazz Competition (IBBC) in the Netherlands.
In 2024, they added another major stage to their list of achievements: the highly regarded Zappanale Festival, established in 1990 and recognized as the world’s largest festival dedicated to one of the most original musical figures of the last century — American guitarist and composer Frank Zappa.
With Zappa’s music, which they affectionately call "heavy artillery," GveriLLaz continue to stand out as a complete original on the Slovenian music scene. Under Peter Ugrin’s direction, the ensemble also embraces modern big band concepts, diverse musical material, and original compositions. This is what a big band should sound like in the third millennium!
