Conversation: Mahmoud Muna. Writer, Publisher, and Bookseller from Jerusalem
On the anniversary of Nakba, in collaboration with our partners, we are organizing a series of events that place the voice of Palestine at the forefront.
Mahmoud Muna will share the story of the Educational Bookshop in occupied Jerusalem, a bookstore founded by his father, a teacher, as an afternoon venture. Through literature and culture, it served as a means to strengthen Palestinian identity. Such bookstores play an indispensable role in resisting occupation, apartheid, and settler colonialism. They are custodians of truth and the cultural heritage of oppressed peoples. This includes the book Daybreak in Gaza: Stories of Palestinian Lives and Culture, which Muna co-edited with Matthew Teller. The book aims to preserve the heritage of the people of Gaza and reveals the richness of Gaza's cultural landscape and the depth of its history.
In February 2025, Israeli police raided the Educational Bookshop twice, arresting Mahmoud Muna and his nephew Imad Muna. They seized books with titles containing the word "Palestine" or featuring Palestinian symbols on the cover, including a children's coloring book and works by Noam Chomsky and Ilan Pappé.
