Cemetery Pobrežje was founded in 1879. Due to its long history and rich tradition is an important member of the international Association of Significant Cemeteries in Europe (ASCE) and part of the European Cemeteries Route, which was created by ASCE.
ASCE is an organization that is currently under the presidency of Pogrebno podjetje Maribor. The purpose of the association is to raise awareness among people about the importance of cemeteries. By sharing their experiences in the field of conservation and promotion of cemeteries, the members of ASCE are trying to awaken the so called cemetery tourism. For this purpose, they established the tourist trail Cemeteries Route. Its objective is to to present cemeteries as interesting and informative tourist destinations, which are also an important part of Europe's cultural heritage.
Cemetery as a reflection of history and place of memories
At the word cemetery is the first association of people mostly relate to graves, death and grief. However, cemeteries are also witnesses of life. Architecture, statues, tombs, tombstone inscriptions. Each part of the cemetery is a mirror of social and cultural development over time. In this respect, cemeteries have an enormous potential to explore history, culture and architecture of the towns in which they are located.
In addition, cemeteries are places of memories. Places that allow visitors to, at least for a moment, escape from the bustle of the city and relax in peace and quiet. To this end, the cemetery Pobrežje created Memory Park (Park spomina) - a green oasis in the middle of the city with a rich cultural and historical heritage. Cemetery visitors can walk along the landscaped cobblestone paths and on the benches in the shade of the trees enjoy the memories.

Today, cemetery Pobrežje cemetery is the central city cemetery. But in the past there were many different cemeteries in the area of Maribor. One of the oldest discovered is Hallstatt burial site which proves that the area of current Maribor was populated already about 1000 years BC. Circumstances of the formation and elimination of all other cemeteries in the area are important for understanding the image and inscriptions on monuments at cemetery Pobrežje.
Without a doubt, cemetery Pobrežje is an important part of Europe's cultural heritage. The stories told by his long history reveal part of the cultural identity of Maribor, Slovenia, and in conjunction with other major European cemeteries, the whole Europe.
