Maribor stories: Hats off to you, ladies!

First Maribor female footballers.

In 1971, the Antena magazine published an ad inviting young women from Maribor and Ljubljana to test their football skills. The response was astonishing, as more than 100 girls eager to play football came to the trial. The best of them became the first Maribor female footballers and were coached by the well-known football enthusiast Pepi Kirbiš.

The first match between the Maribor and Olimpija teams took place on 20 June in Bežigrad in Ljubljana. After the regular time played in front of 12,000 visitors ended with 2:2, the penalties had to be scored and in the end, victory was celebrated by the ladies from Ljubljana. The return match was held at Ljudski vrt and was to decide on the winner of the Narta cosmetics trophy. On 19 September 1971, Ljudski vrt was packed with 8000 spectators. It seems also the female version of the ˮeternal derbyˮ filled the Maribor stadium in those days. The crowd witnessed a majestic victory of the home team with 3:1.

Ladies, hat off to you!
