The unique artistic bench named "Spomin" (Memory) is a powerful reminder of the site's complex history, formerly occupied by the Austrian prison and later the Maribor Correctional and Rehabilitation Institute. The bench's design reflects the transformation of the decaying prison buildings into a space filled with new, more humane purposes.
The base of the bench is constructed from repurposed metal pipes, symbolizing the weight of the building's history and its troubled past. On the other hand, the light concrete seating surface represents the beginning of the revitalization of the building and the area, embodying its promising future.
In 2019, the bench's creators, Maja Žalik, Tjaša Pauko, Lucija Cvejan, and Sara Milič, master's students in architecture at the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Maribor, emerged victorious from an internal competition organized by Assoc. Prof. Nande Korpnik, univ. dipl. inž. arh. The unique bench was then further developed as part of the project "Druga možnost - prebujanje spečih velikanov" (Second Chance - Awakening Sleeping Giants), a project within the international European program URBACT III.
