Bench no. 7: Kaluma

Art as a mirror of society: Promoting ontegration and respect for diversity

At the Maribor Adult Education Institute, you can find the unique artistic bench Kaluma, created by academic painter Tomaž Plavec. The name Kal-uma signifies the germination of art and the cultivation of the mind, reflecting the institute's mission.

From the raw mass, where the legs of the bench are made from pressed, recycled aluminum, new ideas, thoughts, and knowledge transition to the surface through the wooden seat symbolized by heads. The artist also symbolically expresses integration, respect for diversity, and the elimination of barriers that cause conflicts among people.

Academic painter Tomaž Plavec graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts at the University of Ljubljana under Professor Bojan Gorenc. He is a member of the Ptuj city commission for gallery activities and has recently focused primarily on graphics and sculpture.
