UGM | Maribor Art Gallery

Museum of modern and contemporary art

A date with art!

UGM | Maribor Art Gallery is the second-largest museum for modern and contemporary art in Slovenia, boasting a collection of over 10,000 works by Slovenian artists from the late 19th century to the present.

The gallery’s collection includes paintings, sculptures, and graphic works, complemented by photography, video art, multimedia installations, and interactive projects. Alongside masterpieces from the most renowned Slovenian visual artists of the past century, visitors can also explore works by influential international artists, promising young creators, and current trends in contemporary art.

Established in 1954, Maribor gained its first professional institution dedicated to museum and gallery activities in the field of modern art. The main exhibition space is located in a former bourgeois palace from the early 19th century and a former monastery church from the second half of the 18th century. One of the most impressive architectural elements is the painted ceiling in the Great Hall, featuring historical scenes, with its central motif being an exact replica of Raphael’s fresco from the Vatican. Maribor Art Gallery, situated at the corner of Strossmayerjeva and Orožnova streets, spans approximately 800 m² of exhibition space. In 2026, the gallery will expand into the Rotovž – City House of Culture, marking the city’s first purpose-built visual arts exhibition space.

With its collection and an annual program of approximately 15 special exhibitions – ranging from retrospectives of Slovenian artists to international contemporary art festivals and exhibitions on architecture and design – UGM plays a key role in shaping both the domestic and international art scene. A well-designed educational program fosters connections between different generations, cultural communities, and educational institutions.
